Depart from Shi-awela after brunch, and journey along the N1 north, through the Soutpansberg mountains, and then head west. Climb, climb and climb some more… fortunately the vehicle does the work. Enjoy a refreshing beverage from the top.
Drink in the beautiful views, and hopefully view some of the unique wildlife.
Tzaneen : Full day trip

We will visit the area’s first hotel, The Coach House, where they have a delightful country nougat factory, that produces world class nougat that is exported all over the world. We will also enjoy time at the Agatha Crocodile ranch, and lunch up in the romantic Mountains. The Haenetsburg area has the historical monument for the women and children lost in the Anglo Boer War.
Mapungubwe
This is one of the most remarkable icons in the Limpopo. Mapungubwe is situated at the confluence of the Shashi and Limpopo rivers, where the three countries of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana meet. This is approximately a two hour, scenic drive from us.
The great ruins at Mapungubwe, in the Limpopo River Valley, show remains of the first and greatest ever South African kingdom to have flourished. Mapungubwe shows remains of human occupation in and around 850 AD (two and a half centuries before Great Zimbabwe).
The most significant find at Mapungubwe was a gold rhinoceros and gold bowl, dating back to around 1200AD. The artefacts at Mapungubwe illustrate a flourishing trade & advanced social systems of African kingdoms in the 13th Century. It offers a unique bio diversity, birding, game viewing, (elephant if we are lucky) as well as a very interesting, guided tour of the archaeological site that was restricted to the public in the apartheid era. This also offers a tree top walk through the Limpopo forest.
(elevated wooden paths on stilts). Mapungubwe is also the land of the iconic Baobab tree.
Lalapanzi Anglo Boer War Museum
Visit a very charming little local pub and hotel, close to home. This is home to the Anglo Boer War Museum, where many artefacts are displayed from the skirmishes during the War.
